With Washington, it was the same old story last season. A fantastic regular season was followed by disappointment in the postseason. The Capitals have not made it past the second round since 1998. They’ve been at the top of the Eastern Conference multiple times, including a couple President’s trophy seasons, yet they just can never get it done in the postseason. In the process, they’ve choked away several 3-1 series leads. At this point, no matter how good they are in the regular season, I have basically given up any belief I had that they can contend for the Stanley Cup.
Washington really didn’t do much of anything except re-sign guys like Marcus Johansson and Dmitry Orlov. They did acquire Brad Malone, but he won’t likely see much NHL playing time.
I expect the Capitals to be a force in the regular season again, but before I can predict them as a contender, they have to show me that they can get past the second round.
