Coming close to the trade deadline, the Carolina Hurricanes are expected to be very active. Players on the trading block include Andrej Sekera, Jiri Tlusty, and Jay McClement. One more rumor popped up, which included Jordan Staal. Former longtime GM of the Hurricanes, Jim Rutherford, now GM of the Pittsburgh Penguins, stated he was going to try and reacquire Jordan Staal for the Penguins, claiming he is the missing piece. So let me get this straight; he acquires him in 2012 to play with his brother Eric, signs him to a 10 year deal, and now, as Pittsburgh’s GM, he wants to reacquire him? First off, he doesn’t have the cap space; he has only enough to acquire Zach Boychuk. Second, Jordan would be playing back on the 3rd line, and he is no longer a 3rd line center. As of right now, he’s playing on the top line with Eric on his wing. Lastly, it seems like Jim Rutherford feels like he needs to steal someone from his former team. He tried hiring assistant coach Rod Brind’amour for the head coaching job before the season. It really is frustrating as a Canes fan to see him try this. Ron Francis, however, was quick to deny rumors that he was looking to trade Jordan Staal. I would like to say to Rutherford to go for someone else; he does not control the Hurricanes anymore.
