Yes, I’m calling my own team pathetic. The Carolina Hurricanes have cost themselves probably 20 points in the standings with their horrendous powerplay. Since the end of the Olympic break, they have gone 0-28, allowing 4 shorthanded goals. Last night was a must win against the Rangers to stay in the playoff race. In the 3rd, they gave up a shorthanded goal, a 4-on-4 goal, and a 5-on-3 powerplay goal, leading to a 4-2 win for the Rangers. I predicted this team to make the playoffs because they have plenty of offensive talent, with improvements made defensively. Players like Alex Semin, Jeff Skinner, Jordan and Eric Staal, and Tuomo Ruutu (now a Devil) are all very talented offensively. So why doesn’t it show up on the powerplay? What is the problem? Is it the players? Is it the leadership? To me Eric Staal and Alex Semin have been the most consistent forwards on the team. In my eyes it falls on the coaching. The powerplay is worse than it was under Paul Maurice. It’s at 12.9 %, 29th in the league. Over half the players that played under Maurice are gone. That tells me that the team they have now does not fit in Muller’s system, who also doesn’t seem to be able to motivate his guys. That goes for John MacLean as well. They are supposed to be powerplay specialists, also. It’s just a dysfunctional embarrassment.
