Slovenia won their first Olympic game 3-1 over Slovakia.
Switzerland defeated Czech Republic 1-0.
Sweden held off Latvia with a 5-3 victory. There could have easily been an upset.
Now let’s talk about Russia vs USA. It was a 3-2 shootout victory for team USA, but even though I’m happy they won, I was disappointed with their effort overall. Many times it seemed to me that the USA played too much like an All-Star team, relying on individual talent. Patrick Kane was one of the worst out there up until late in the 3rd to overtime. Russia controlled play, and just about won in regulation. A goal was waved off with under 4 minutes left in regulation, the net just off the pegs. In the NHL, it would’ve counted, since it would’ve been ruled as going into the net anyway. After 5 minutes of 4-on-4 OT, It headed to a shootout. Now in international play, after the first three shooters, a team can repeat players, which ended up being very important. In the first three rounds, Oshie scored for USA, and Kovalchuk scored for Russia. Kovalchuk and Datsyuk then rotated, while Oshie was used over and over. Oshie won it in the 8th round, scoring 4 out of 6 shootout attempts, which was amazing to watch. If it wasn’t for Oshie and Quick, this would’ve been Russia’s game.
Sweden upset Finland today with a 4-2 victory, and Switzerland defeated Russia 2-0. Sweden will face USA, and Switzerland will play Canada in the semifinals. The winners of those two games, which will most likely be USA and Canada, will play for the gold, while the other two will play for the bronze. The other 4 will play for 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th.
