The Ottawa Senators ended 7th in the East last season, beating Montreal in round 1 of the playoffs, but losing to Pittsburgh right after. They had some kind of offseason.
It all starts with captain Daniel Alfredsson, who decided to part ways with Ottawa, signing with Detroit. Coming as a shock and disappointment, the Senators acted quickly. The same day Alfredsson signed with the Red Wings, the Senators traded for Bobby Ryan. Even though I think they may have given up a little too much for him, they found an immediate replacement for their former captain. Along with that, they signed Clark MacArthur, who has become a solid scorer in the league. The return of Jason Spezza and Erik Karlsson are very important to their success this season. They bring tremendous skills and leadership.
Also, acquiring Cory Conacher was a steal for them. It happened at the trade deadline, but it will contribute to their success this season and in the future.
Overall, I think they will be competing for a playoff spot, maybe a top 3 in the Atlantic division. I believe they are going to be stronger than last season, although if they don’t make the top three, they may not make the post-season.
