The Phoenix Coyotes ended winning the division title last season. They won their 1st playoff series since coming over from Winnipeg, defeating the Blackhawks, as well as the Predators, before falling to the Los Angeles Kings. I wanted Los Angeles win, but at the same time, it would have been pretty cool to see the Coyotes make it to the Stanley Cup finals. They had a pretty successful off-season.
Their worst loss was Ray Whitney, who scored 77 points for them last season. Adrian Aucoin also departed. They had good additions, though. First, they sign Steve Sullivan, who can score 40-50 points in the season. They grabbed David Moss, someone who can bring physicality to the team, as well as being able to score occasionally. Nick Johnson was added as well; he has 31 points in 87 career games.
The most important move, though, was retaining possession of star captain Shane Doan. There was a lot of talk this off-season about the possibility of Doan leaving Phoenix. One team put on the table a four-year $30 million contract offer to him. Nobody knew exactly what team gave him that offer, but it was thought to be the Carolina Hurricanes. Doan stayed with the coyotes, though. It would’ve been huge blow to the team if he left.
I think the Coyotes could be as good as last year, and make the playoffs, but I believe the Dallas Stars will win the division.
